How engine oil helps:

• Cooling: Helps to dispense heat from engine parts exposed to high temperatures due to friction and combustion.
• Sealing: Coats the cylinder wall and piston rings with a thin coat of oil to seal-in compressed gas and prevent power loss. 
• Cleaning: Traps impurities such as metal particles, sludge and soot and channels them into the oil filter.
